The road trip through Arizona that inspired HERE AND GONE
In 2015, I was invited by John Joseph Doherty of Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, to speak to a class studying fiction based on conflict. It so happened that I would be doing a reading at the great Poisoned Pen bookstore in Scottsdale AZ that September. It also so happened that I'd been planning a novel set in Arizona, and this would provide a perfect opportunity for research. John very kindly agreed to take me on a two day road trip from the Phoenix metro area, through the low desert, and up to the forests around Flagstaff.
While John drove, I took photographs and scribbled in my notebook. Many of the experiences and locations from that trip wound up in HERE AND GONE. The images below have captions attached, giving some insight to the locations in the book.
My eternal thanks to John Joseph Doherty for taking me on this trip; the book would have been far less without it.

The first video is Lake Mormon, dried up by the drought in Arizona, which inspired the location of Lake Modesty. You also get a brief glimpse of my guide, John Joseph Doherty. The second is a drive around the town of Gisela, whose location inspired the town of Silver Water. Although Gisela is a much smaller town than Silver Water, Silver Water's outskirts look much like this.
